Pas Stresses Islamic Values As Key Credentials For Malaysia S Prime Minister

PAS Spiritual Leader, Datuk Hashim Jasin, has underscored that a Prime Minister in Malaysia must embody strong Islamic credentials, not merely rely on political popularity or numerical support.
Speaking at the 64th PAS Ulama Council General Assembly at the Darul Hadis Complex, Kampung Tok Keling, Hashim said the highest leader of the nation must fear Allah, practice shariah, prepare for the afterlife, and be content with whatever sustenance Allah has decreed.
“We want a leader of that kind, not one who takes pride in having the support of the masses,” he said, stressing that true leadership should guide the people towards goodness and welfare rather than the pursuit of power.
He cited the late Tok Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s 22-year leadership in Kelantan as proof that ulama are capable of governing effectively and with stability.
“When we first appointed Tok Guru Nik Aziz as Menteri Besar, UMNO leaders said this government would collapse within three months. But it wasn’t three months, not six months, not even a year. Rather, it was 22 years without any problem,” he said.
He emphasised that PAS’s track record in governing states demonstrates that ulama are not only capable of leadership but also able to provide stability while implementing policies grounded in Islamic principles.
Echoing this view, PAS Vice-President Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah stressed that the party has no shortage of credible figures to be nominated as Prime Minister if required. With 43 Members of Parliament, he said PAS has a wide pool of qualified leaders.
“Why say PAS has no candidate for Prime Minister? I myself can be Prime Minister, what’s the problem? We have many figures, surely not even one is unqualified. That doesn’t make sense,” Mohd Amar remarked, though he stressed that the priority now is winning the 16th General Election before naming a candidate.
He added that PAS does not believe in promoting a “poster boy,” but rather in securing electoral victory first before leaving the final decision to the party leadership and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. — Focus Malaysia
