Unnecessary Fury Over Sunway Square Mall S Pet Friendly Policy Only Gives Muslims A Bad Name

FURRY four-legged friends are welcome … or are they not?
The PR (public relations) move to attract pet-lovers to Sunway Square Mall in Petaling Jaya seems to have angered one social media user based on the Thread platform.

In it, user amran.hassan70 expressed displeasure that Sunway Square Mall has become a pet-friendly zone by allowing dogs into its premises. Claiming this would make Malay-Muslim customers feel uncomfortable, he urged them to exercise their consumer rights to not frequent such establishments.

Editor’s Note: According to the shopping mall’s website, pets are restricted to four zones – lakeside park, pet playground, carpark and mall access. There will be designated lifts for pet owners and their furry chums.
One commenter just could not fathom the need for pet owners to bring along their animals on shopping trips. “Just leave them at home,” he expressed his disapproval.

However, the majority of the comments took an opposite view. Some commenters lambasted the poster for his narrow perspective which they argue gave non-Muslims a negative impression of Islam.
One even went as far as calling the poster out for his “entitled privileged attitude” while another argued that such posts were an embarrassment to other Muslims.
Citing IOI Mall in Damansara as another example, this commenter pointed out that most dog owners would place their furry friends in carriers or trollies. There was absolutely no need for this poster to raise this issue, it was lamented.

Many commenters quite rightly pointed out that there were tonnes of malls to choose from, hence why bother making a mountain out of a molehill and why single out Sunway Square Mall.

In a clear display of opposite perspectives, some Muslim commenters proclaimed their love of dogs and couldn’t wait to visit the mall.

However, the poster’s pseudo-conservative credentials took a bit of hammering when other commenters highlighted sexually inappropriate remarks he had made at a female FB user in a different thread.

With his apparent “cover” blown, it appears this is just another attempt at stirring the hornet’s nest by a (paid?) keyboard warrior insinuating that such pet-friendly venues are a snub to Malay-Muslims and thus further proof that their rights and privileges are being eroded.
It is indeed heartening to see many Malay-Muslim commenters telling this poster off for raising a non-issue and casting negative impressions on Muslims with this entitled rant.
Choices are aplenty especially in the Klang Valley; exercise your consumer right to choose without creating an unnecessary fuss was the key message by many Muslim animal lovers.
As pointed out by quite a few commenters, he was in no position to be casting aspersions given his own conduct is despicable. – Focus Malaysia
