Muhyiddin For Pm Hold Your Horses Pas Leaders Tell Bersatu
Bersatu’s endorsement of its president, Muhyiddin Yassin, as its candidate for the next prime minister appears to have hit a sore spot with fellow Perikatan Nasional coalition partner PAS.
Following Bersatu’s move to back Muhyiddin, PAS leaders cautioned against making hasty decisions without proper consultations among members of the opposition coalition.
PAS and PN election director Sanusi Nor reportedly highlighted that Bersatu cannot make such vital decisions on its own without the consensus of other coalition partners.
“My view is that Bersatu should not be overly enthusiastic on its own,” Free Malaysia Today quoted the Kedah menteri besar as saying last night.
ADSExpressing similar sentiments, Annuar Musa said today that naming a prime ministerial candidate is not a priority for PN at this moment, stressing instead that efforts should focus on strengthening each party and building credible alliances.
The deputy director-general of PAS’ central election department also said that the political reality shows that no single party has the strength to form a government on its own, thus necessitating cooperation with others.

PAS central election department deputy DG Annuar Musa“Leave aside for now the agenda of proposing who will be prime minister.
“Leave that task to the coalition when the time comes, and it should not be done unilaterally. There must be cross-party consultation,” he added in a social media post today.
He asserted that Malaysians are yearning for a figure from PN who can offer new hope and “fresh leadership,” in contrast to what is being offered by the coalition government.
He also stressed the importance of parties “cleansing” itself by improving their images and policies as well as through restoring public trust.
Unanimous backing
Yesterday, Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali said delegates at the 8th Bersatu annual general meeting in Shah Alam had unanimously supported three key resolutions: adopting the president’s policy speech, backing Muhyiddin’s leadership of Bersatu, and formally nominating him as the party’s prime ministerial candidate.
The question of who should be PN’s prime ministerial candidate for the 16th general election has consistently heightened tensions among its component parties.

In November, PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin refuted claims that Muhyiddin had been finalised as PN’s official choice, claiming that PAS is more suitable to lead the coalition with its track record in Parliament and “stronger” grassroots machinery.
Responding to the matter, Muhyiddin later said PAS has the right to want a prime ministerial candidate from its own party.
However, he added that such decisions are made by component party leaders within the coalition. - Mkini
