Pas Mp Wants Family Ministry To Provide Moral Support For Polygamy
PARLIAMENT | A PAS top leader today suggested the government should provide moral support for men who are capable of entering polygamy.
Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (Perikatan Nasional-Kubang Kerian) said the practice can be a "way out" for millions of women over 30 who are still unmarried.
According to the PAS deputy president, Malaysia's population census report in 2010 showed that 5.56 million Malaysians above the age of 30 had decided to either marry late, not to get married just yet, or not to get married at all.
Of this, he said, 4.8 million were women. The top reasons cited to be behind the decision were financial problems (56 percent), no suitable prospects yet (18.4 percent), and career (9.4 percent).
"Our country has been sensitive about the issue of polygamy. Whenever we touch this topic, (the response) is akin to having committed a crime.
"I believe the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has to be rational in this issue.
"Moral support should be given to those who have the capability and eligibility to enter polygamy and are able to be fair (in marriage).
"Imagine, 4.8 million women are still unmarried," he said when debating the Budget 2024 at the committee stage for the ministry.
According to Tuan Ibrahim, such practice may not be the ultimate solution to the problem.
However, it can provide a solution for women who want to get married.
"I think many from the other side (government bench) will agree with me on this.
"This is just an idea for the government to consider in finding an answer (to the problem)," he said. - Mkini
