Malaysia Airlines Mulls Order For 45 Aircraft To Support Growth
Malaysia Airlines has 20 Airbus SE A330neos on order and 25 Boeing Co 737 Max jets due to join its fleet.PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Airlines Bhd is considering ordering as many as 45 new aircraft to support its long-term growth plans, group managing director Izham Ismail told Bloomberg News today.
This will involve 35 narrowbodies and 10 twin-aisle jets with the widebody order for delivery from 2030, he said at the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines’ annual meeting in Singapore.
For the single-aisle jets, the carrier will contact manufacturers for bids in the first quarter of 2024 and aim for first deliveries in 2028, he said.
Malaysia Airlines already has 20 Airbus SE A330neos on order and 25 Boeing Co 737 Max jets due to join its fleet. The Max deliveries have been held up by bulkhead checks, but the airline expects the first to come within a week.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft on order is to replace older jets on short-haul and domestic services.
Malaysia Airlines’s mainline jet current fleet consists of a mix of Boeing and Airbus types, including six Airbus A330-200s, 15 A330-300s, and 42 Boeing 737-800s.
Meanwhile, Malaysia Aviation Group Bhd (MAG), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines, is on track to achieve its first full-year net profit since the airline group was privatised in 2014.
The turnaround comes two years after it completed a restructuring exercise in February 2021 that saw it achieve a reduction in its liabilities of over RM15 billion.
MAG posted a net profit of RM1.15 billion on revenue of RM3.8 billion in Q4 FY2022. For the year ended Dec 31, 2022 (FY2022), it recorded a net operating profit of RM556 million, narrowing its net loss for the year by 79% to RM344 million from RM1.65 billion in FY2021. - FMT
