“The underlying issue is that PH has not fulfilled ‘the spirit of the unity government’.
“In view of this, MCA has no obligation to support their candidates,” Ng said in his speech at the Selangor MCA convention.
He said component parties in the unity government should treat each other with “courtesy and consideration” and ensure their survival as a political party.
“We have experienced this in Barisan Nasional and the unity government should follow this principle as well,” he added.
Ng, however, stressed that MCA would help Barisan Nasional’s candidates in their election campaigns.
On July 5, MCA announced that the party will be sitting out of the upcoming state elections following “in-depth discussion and analysis” and in view of the current political situation.
Meanwhile, MCA president Wee Ka Siong said the party decided not to contest in the state polls as they realised that they have tasted “more defeats than victories” in those six states since 2008.
He added that the party would have a very tough time with seat talks since it had no negotiating power.
In his speech here, Wee also said it would be better for MCA to follow “the grand coalition” after both PH and BN decided to contest the state elections as a united front, instead of letting component parties negotiate seat allocations independently.
“We want to meaningfully participate in these state polls, instead of becoming a decorative wallflower.
“However, this does not mean that we are going to give up these seats forever. Our ambition is to take part in future general elections,” said Wee.
Six states – Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Penang, Terengganu and Kelantan – will be holding their state elections concurrently on Aug 12. - FMT
