Netizens Mock Pas Lawmaker For Sarcastic Jibe Over Pmx S Claim That Mps Can Earn Rm40k Month

IN a social media post dripping with sarcasm, Bachok MP Syahir Sulaiman (@syahirnomic) penned that he cannot help but only smile upon reading Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s claim that monthly wages of MPs could exceed RM40,000.
The political secretary to PAS supremo Tan Sri Hadi Awang who is also touted as the Perikatan Nasional (PN) shadow economy minister further noted that he was overjoyed to be greeted by such “happy news” during the fasting month.
Syahir was responding to PMX’s statement that the latter was puzzled that opposition MPs could claim to be poor when “they’re earning five-figure sums”.

The PAS lawmaker’s sarcastic post came amid attempts by opposition parties to get additional funding via a memorandum of understanding (MOU).
Even without a MOU for allocations, PMX has remarked that their constituencies still get funding albeit channelled directly to the people or projects instead of going through the MPs.
The 41-year-old MP’s post on the X platform has not gone down well with the mostly Madani government backers who sided with PMX’s claim.
One pointedly asked if Syahir himself was observing the fasting month (insinuating that he should not be lying) while furnishing a chart detailing the basic wages and the many allowances an MP is entitled to. And yes, the approximate figure is above RM30,000/month.

One simply called a spade for what it was by labelling Syahir “a liar every time he opens his mouth”.

One netizen was obviously not amused by the former International Islamic University’s (IIU) graduate’s caustic comment that he was fasting.

Some others derided the former corporate citizen who has worked in Shell and Sime Darby for not grasping simple Malay.

One commenter drew comparisons between the wages – in addition to pension prospect after having completed 36 months of service and reached 50 years pf age – of MPs with the meagre allowances of PAS-affiliated Islamic kindergarten Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam (PASTI) teachers.

One netizen challenged Syahir to produce his pay slip to show that he was not lying.

More than a few could not contain their disgust at MPs who were collecting such bumper payouts every month while neglecting their duties, including no-shows in parliament.

One claimed he would fully support the PN front if it pledged to abolish pension of MPs in favour of EPF (Employees Provident Fund) contributions.

More than one chided Syahir and PAS for forever resorting to “Milo tin” donations to bail the party out of trouble when slapped with court summonses (usually for defamation). This is in spite of their fat pay cheques.

It does look like the PAS lawmaker has been made to look very foolish here. Syahir’s attempt at sarcasm has backfired as many netizens could point to publicly available information to back up PMX’s claims.
In the local political arena, political grandstanding is very much the norm, indeed it is expected. But politicians should know when to stay silent lest they ended up looking foolish which the Bachok MP certainly does right now. – Focus Malaysia
