Pmx Chastised For Not Rallying Chinese Tycoons To Chip In For His Wakaf Madani Fund But Why Should They

IT seems that there is some degree of discontentment within opposition-slant Malays in that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has exempted non-Malays from contributing or channelling funds to his Wakaf Madani project.
Valid or otherwise, their simplistic justification is that many Chinese tycoons have in one way or another benefited from the dishing out of government projects, hence should not be shying away to give back to the society.
But here is the catch as to whether they ought to do so. This is because Wakaf Madani which was mooted by PMX in his Budget 2023 speech is intended to optimise “more than RM1 bil of donated assets” to empower Bumiputera children and entrepreneurs through grants and other forms of support.
Ultimately, Wakaf Madani will see to it that assets such as land, mosques, buildings, health services and education are optimised for the well-being of the poor, low wage earners and other needy stakeholders.
In fact, PMX had during the tabling of Budget 2025 on Oct 18 last year, stated that the Wakaf Madani initiative will be expanded to include the private sector while the Retirement Fund Inc (KWAP) will provide RM300 mil to enhance the development of wakaf land for building independent retirement homes for low-income retirees.
Fast forward to the present, PMX was cited by Malay language news portal MalaysiaGazette (MG) as saying that several figures from large Malay-owned companies have expressed their commitment to donate to the Madani Waqf.
Among others, he also revealed that several details are currently being worked out before the names of the figures are announced. Earlier, PMX had announced a RM35 mil allocation to boost the waqf ecosystem in Malaysia at the 2025 National Waqf Month celebration recently.
Interestingly, pro-opposition political activist and influencer Ratu Naga capitalised on the catchy headline of “Big Malay company figures agree to donate to Madani Waqf: PM” to re-post the MG article on her Facebook page with an equally tantalising one-liner, “Am I right? Ahahahahahhaha”.
This obviously ruffled the feathers of her anti-DAP fanbase to train their guns on Chinese tycoons even though the entire Wakaf Madani concept is Bumiputera-centric in nature.
Among the more ‘palatable’ reaction is the insinuation that PMX only knows how to milk the Malays when he requires money to fund his brainchild but at the end of the day, there is seemingly mutual favouritism towards the Chinese when dishing out project tenders.
Other brickbats bordering absurdity hurled at PMX ranged from the accusation that he is only eroding the Malay corporate wealth with his action when he could have approached “gambling industry tycoons” or that “all the money raised will eventually be channelled to fund Chinese schools”.

To address the grouses of the opposition-slant faction, Chinese tycoons are surely welcome “to donate” to PMX’s Wakaf Madani project but this should be on the basis of voluntarism as opposed to making their contribution mandatory. The same principle probably applies to the cause of re-building war-torn Gaza as evident from Starbucks recent pledge of RM500,000 to support local artists and Palestine relief efforts.
At any rate, such prevailing mentality among the opposition backers is unsurprising given that they may have been fed with untruth in a political environment where race and religion still thrive in the daily affairs of every Malaysian whether they like it or not. – Focus Malaysia
