Najib Shocked To Check Contents Of Macc S Audio Clips

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak today said he needed time to study the contents of an audio recording which allegedly depicted him conspiring with a prominent prosecutor
"Saya terkejut (I am shocked by this) revelation. I am studying this revelation and I am studying the contents (of the audio clips)
"This has never happened in history... I will discuss it with my lawyers," he said when met at the Kuala Lumpur court complex today
Najib also suggested that the "timing" of the release was linked to the Kimanis by-election campaign

Asked if the audio recordings could be the result of telephone tapping, Najib said he would have to study the law on this
"I need to study the law on this and see what I can do because, at the time (the alleged conversation took place), I was the head of the government," he said
This morning, the MACC played nine audio clips before the press, purportedly of Najib speaking to various individuals in connection to investigations on the 1MDB affair in 2016
One clip allegedly involved then prosecutor Dzulkefli Ahmad regarding an "investigation paper" purportedly aimed at Najib. Dzulkefli eventually became the MACC boss
The MACC said the audio clips were believed to be authentic but they were unable to reveal the source. The MACC intends to file complaints with the relevant authorities and furnish them with the evidence in their possession. The audio clips, said the MACC, pointed to elements of abuse of power, criminal conspiracy, obstruction of justice, compromising national security, fabrication of false evidence through foreign aid and connivance. [More to follow] - Mkini
