Police Audio Recordings Investigation Opened But Yet To Receive Any Clips
Police have opened an investigation into the audio recordings received by MACC, which contained conversations purportedly between former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak and several individuals, including foreign leaders pertaining to 1MDB
This was confirmed by the police's Classified Crime Investigation Unit chief Mior Farid Alathrash (photo), who said that they have received a report from MACC chief Latheefa Koya earlier this evening
"I can confirm that a police report has been lodged in Putrajaya earlier this evening
"The report was lodged by the MACC chief," he told Malaysiakini when contacted
Mior also confirmed that the investigation would be carried out by the unit, which is under the Criminal Investigation Department
However, according to the senior police officer, the cops have not received any of the audio clips from MACC
"We haven't gotten the audio yet."He declined to elaborate further when asked under what Act the investigation would be conducted, saying that there will be a press conference by inspector-general Abdul Hamid Bador and CID director Huzir Mohamed on Monday
What Mior told Malaysiakini, however, contradicted a statement by Latheefa, who told reporters yesterday that MACC had handed over part of the nine audio recordings to police.
Malaysiakini has sent requests for MACC comments on this to Latheefa and the commission's corporate communications department
On Wednesday, the MACC released audio recordings of several telephone conversations involving Najib and related to the 1MDB scandal
Among them were several calls between him and former MACC chief Dzulkifli Ahmad
Others included conversations between Najib and high ranking individuals from the United Arab Emirates, concerning the US Department of Justice's 1MDB civil forfeiture suits and funds channelled to the former premier's stepson Riza Aziz. - Mkini
