Najib Jailed 12 Years Fined Rm210 Mil
(FMT) – Former prime minister Najib Razak was sentenced to 12 years’ jail and fined RM210 million after he was found guilty of seven counts of corruption in relation to RM42 million of SRC International funds.
High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali also sentenced Najib, 67, to 10 years on each of the three counts of criminal breach of trust.
He was exempted from whipping due to his age.
Nazlan also imposed a jail term of 10 years each for the three counts of money laundering.
The judge, however, ordered the jail terms to run concurrently, which means Najib will serve 12 years in jail.
Nazlan allowed the application by the defence to stay the jail sentence in view of the hefty fine imposed.
“However , the bail of the accused will be raised from the current RM1 million to RM2 million in two sureties. The (extra) amount must be paid by tomorrow,’ he said.
Nazlan also ordered Najib to report to the police station of his choice on the first and 15th of every month.
Earlier, Nazlan said he had taken into consideration public interest and Najib’s wellbeing in determining the measure of sentence.
“I have considered the provisions in the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission Act , the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) and the Penal Code,” he said.
The judge also weighed Najib’s contribution to the country and its economic growth against the fact that the offences were committed in Najib’s capacity as prime minister.
He said the sentencing trend must also reflect the key policies of deterrence and retribution.
