Najib Decries Persecution Vows To Fight Bankruptcy Notice

Najib Abdul Razak has decried his political persecution after being served with a bankruptcy notice by the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) over the RM1.7 billion taxes it sought from him.
Taking to social media tonight, the former prime minister vowed to fight back against the government's move.
"I will not bow to individuals who abused the law to oppress me on a political basis and greed to cling on to power.
"I have asked my counsel to obtain a stay order against the punishment.
"I am sure that the timing of the bankruptcy notice is related to these issues. A survey conducted by UUM (University Utara Malaysia) and Utusan TV which involved 60,000 respondents showed that I was their designated prime minister candidate for the 15th general election," he said.
"Secondly, it related to a decision made at Umno's annual general assembly of not cooperating with Bersatu in the next general election," added Najib.
Najib said if he is declared bankrupt, he will lose his parliamentarian status and a by-election will have to be held.
In June 2019, the government, through IRB, filed a suit against Najib, where it sought over RM1.69 billion from the former premier, with an annual five percent interest rate beginning from the date of judgment, as well as cost and other relief deemed fit by the court.
In its statement of claim, the government said Najib had failed to pay his income taxes for 2011 to 2017 within the stipulated 30-day period after assessment notices were issued.

As such, the amount owed each year was increased by 10 percent. - Mkini
