Mps Form Bipartisan Caucus To Study Medical Marijuana Ketum Regulations

MPs from both sides of the aisle have banded together to form a bipartisan caucus to study regulations and form policies for the medical use of marijuana and ketum.

The caucus consists of nine members and is chaired by Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman - who has been advocating hard for medical marijuana use in the recently concluded Parliament sitting.
The other members are Azalina Othman Said (BN-Pengerang), Khalid Ibrahim (Pakatan Harapan-Shah Alam), Dr Xavier Jayakumar (Independent-Kuala Langat), Darell Leiking (Warisan-Penampang), Dr Kelvin Yii (Harapan-Bandar Kuching), Dr Azman Ismail (Harapan-Kuala Kedah), Lukanisman Awang Sauni (GPS-Sibuti), Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas).
A parliamentary caucus in the Malaysian context refers to an informal working group between MPs to work on certain issues.
In a statement today, the caucus said as part of their initial framework, they will meet with medical experts, researchers, industry players, NGOs, and ministries involved to get their feedback on formulating a policy.
They will then come up with a draft proposal for the government's attention to ensure that patients who rely on cannabis or ketum for medical treatment can be put under the country's healthcare system.
The group said their work is in line with efforts to expand the medical marijuana and ketum industries in Malaysia, which they said can benefit the country's healthcare industry as well as locals.
Previously, Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin had said that the government was looking into legalising the use of medical marijuana.
Currently, cannabis is listed as a controlled drug under the Dangerous Drugs Act.
Ketum, meanwhile, is regulated under the Poisons Act. - Mkini
