Hamzah Putrajaya Looking Into Legalisation Of Medical Marijuana

Putrajaya is currently looking into the legalisation of medical marijuana and related laws, said Home Affairs Minister Hamzah Zainudin (Bersatu-Larut).
He was responding to Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Independent-Muar) who asked if the government will open up the medical cannabis industry in Malaysia.
“It is true, we are studying... whether the usage of cannabis for medical purposes can be done, and studying how the laws can be used later,” Hamzah said.
He was giving his winding-up speech for the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) debate in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Earlier, he said there is already a special committee in the cabinet that is addressing matters related to the control of drugs, including the medical cannabis issue.
Syed Saddiq previously called on the government to table a science and data-driven working paper on the pros and cons of using hemp and medical marijuana.
He said the hemp and medical marijuana industry is set to become a RM400 billion industry in four years and Malaysia should get in the game early.
He also pressed the issue during International Trade and Industry Minister Azmin Ali’s winding-up speech, asking whether the latter’s ministry would consider approving the use of medical cannabis for export.
Azmin said though the matter had been discussed since the Pakatan Harapan federal administration, it will need to be reviewed by the current government.
He added that any policy change would involve several amendments to the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 from the Ministry of Health.
Currently, cannabis is listed as a controlled drug under the Dangerous Drugs Act. - Mkini
