Kerajaan Perancis Menghadapi Krisis Apabila Anggota Dewan Mengundi Mengenai Cukai Kekayaan
French Socialists threaten government collapse unless wealth tax is part of austerity budget, leading to political stalemate.
PARIS: French legislators are set to vote on a wealth tax today after a key faction warned it would destabilize the government if the tax is not included in the upcoming austerity budget.
Amid ongoing political unrest, France is under pressure to pass a spending bill by the end of the year to manage its deficit and rising debt levels.
Sebastien Lecornu, the nation’s third prime minister in just over a year, has committed to achieving success where his two predecessors failed due to austerity-related issues.
Lecornu narrowly escaped a confidence vote this month by halting an unpopular pension reform following pressure from the Socialists.
The Socialists, who are essential to the balance of power in parliament, have insisted on a tax targeting the ultra-wealthy, threatening to destabilize the government by Monday if their demands are unmet.
They had proposed a tax based on the work of French economist Gabriel Zucman, aimed at about 1,800 wealthy households to generate 20 billion euros each year.
Zucman’s initial proposal mandated a minimum two percent wealth tax for individuals with assets surpassing 100 million euros.
Both the far-right parties and Lecornu’s government oppose taxing professional assets, which would be impacted by the proposed tax.
The government favors taxing wealth management assets worth at least five million euros instead.
As a compromise, the Socialists have now proposed a minimum three percent tax on assets over 10 million euros, while excluding family and innovative businesses.
The revised proposal will be debated in parliament on Saturday.
As discussions got underway, Zucman warned the Socialists against diluting his original tax concept.
He stated on France Inter radio that crafting a tax fraught with loopholes and evasion risks would ensure its failure.
Since President Emmanuel Macron called for snap parliamentary elections last year to solidify his influence, France has been mired in political deadlock.
