Kedah Farmer Comes Up With 2 New Durian Varieties

(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: A durian farmer in Bedong, Kedah, has come up with two new varieties, known as D216 (J Sparrow) and D217 (Jerai), with a unique taste and shape.
State executive councillor Azman Nasrudin, introducing the two varieties today, said he expected good demand for the new clones, Bernama reported.
He said the J Sparrow durian has light yellow-brown flesh with a moderate aroma and an average sweetness of 35.3% Brix (a sugar content rating) with moderate bitterness.
“The durian Jerai has light yellow flesh and a strong aroma, average sweetness of 35% Brix with moderate bitterness. It has a medium rough texture and a strong creamy taste,” he said at a press conference attended by Kedah agriculture director Ramli Abdul Rahman and durian farmer Teoh Seng Khoon.

Azman said he hoped the planters of the durian variety would be able to plant more of such durian trees so that the new variety could become prevalent in the market.

He said the J Sparrow is sold at between RM35-RM45 per kg, and the Jerai variant at RM20-RM35 per kg.
The two varieties were planted at a durian orchard in Kampung Ketapang, Sungai Tok Pawang, Bedong, with seven trees of the J Sparrow variety and 10 for the Jerai. - FMT
