(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: An elder sister and a younger brother are contesting against each other for the Kukusan seat in the Sabah state assembly elections after being on opposing sides since 2018
When Ma’mun Sulaiman contested the Kalabakan parliamentary seat for Warisan in 2018 and 2022, his elder sister Chaya was on the team of his Barisan Nasional rivals. He won in 2018 but was defeated in 2022.
Kukusan is a state seat within the Kalabakan parliamentary constituency.
Chaya, who is the BN candidate for Kukusan, said her contest against Ma’mun and their differing political ideals will not affect their relationship.
“Family members contesting against each other in elections in Kalabakan is nothing new,” she said, Bernama reported.
“I’m carrying BN’s banner and he is carrying his own party’s flag. We are contesting in a professional manner,” she told reporters after filing her nomination papers.
Ma’mun said their family bonds remain intact despite having to compete against Chaya.
“In the 2018 general election, I contested the Kalabakan parliamentary seat under Warisan against the late Abdul Ghapur Salleh of BN. At the time, my sister was working in his campaign team. I won the seat.
“Again in 2022, I contested the Kalabakan seat and faced BN’s Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandi. My sister was with Andi’s team against me and it was never an issue. So, perhaps it’s fate that we now cross paths in the Kukusan seat,” he said.
Ma’mun and Chaya are among 10 contenders for the seat, including Rina Jainal, who seeks re-election as an independent after previously winning on a Warisan ticket.
Sibling rivalry is also the case in Petagas seat, with Awang Husaini Sahari contesting for Pakatan Harapan against his older brother, Awang Ahmad Sah, who seeks re-election as an independent after not being renominated by Gabungan Rakyat Sabah. - FMT
