A resident who lives about 100 meters away from the affected area, Nor Azizi, 66, said he was watching television when he heard the loud bang.
"The whole area shook and I initially thought that it was an earthquake but then I saw the flames filling the sky above.
"The explosion was so loud, it rattled the windows of my house," he said when met at the scene.
Nor said and his family members immediately left the house to find a safer place to wait.
"I have lived here for over 10 years and this is the first time such an incident has occurred here. This neighbourhood usually does not see any drama like this happening," he said.
The retired oil and gas worker said he believed this was the first ever gas pipeline explosion to occur in the country.
The flames which shot high in the air were visible all the way from the Shah Alam exit along the Elite Highway.
As New Straits Times reporters got closer to the scene, the heat of the fire could be felt from inside their vehicles.
