Govt To Provide Rm1m Set Up Special Committee For P Hailing Riders
Amidst the growing frustration of delivery riders, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that the government will allocate RM1 million to form a special committee.
Anwar, also the Finance Minister said this will allow the riders to elect committee members to ensure their grievances are aired to their companies.
He proposed this because riders are considered freelancers and ideally cannot unionise.
“You must set up a committee to collectively share your issues with the finance ministry.
“Then, I will share your problems with the entrepreneur ministry and other relevant ministries along with the p-hailing companies and stakeholders,” Anwar said during the P-Hailing Riders Assembly in Petaling Jaya today.
Over 5000 p-hailing riders attended the assembly, which also featured a talk by caretaker Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.
Anwar added that the committee would be able to speak up about their low salaries, inability to apply for personal loans and insurance, and other concerns related to their field.
According to FMT, a group representing p-hailing riders urged Putrajaya last year to improve the ecosystem in Budget 2023, ensuring their welfare after facing challenges.
The Malaysian P-Hailing Delivery Riders Association urged Putrajaya to adopt a wage floor plan to provide delivery riders with a stable income.
Meanwhile, Anwar told riders that he will meet with p-hailing companies in a week to discuss the minimum rates for every delivery.
He was responding to a suggestion made by a rider at the event, who lamented that e-hailing riders need to perform at least two deliveries to earn a minimum of RM7.
The rider said this slimmed their monthly earnings and added that it was only fair for the RM7 minimum to be implemented for each delivery instead.
He also mentioned that the rates were gradually decreasing, raising concerns that there is no stability within the system.
“Give me a week, I will call all p-hailing companies to come to the Prime Minister’s Office so that I can pass your message that the (delivery) rates are too low,” Anwar said. - Mkini
