Hamzah Set To Head Pn S Indian Special Committee Coalition Sources
Perikatan Nasional secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin is set to head the coalition's Indian community special committee.
Several sources in the coalition confirmed the matter when contacted by Malaysiakini.
"We had our first meeting on Thursday, and in that meeting we decided that Hamzah would be appointed as the committee's chairperson," a source told the news portal.
"Meanwhile, former Selangor MIC youth chief P Punithan will be the deputy chairperson," the source added.
The source also said that an official announcement would be made soon after the appointment is agreed to by PN's supreme council - which will be meeting tomorrow.
Meanwhile, another source said Hamzah's appointment would only be temporary.
The source claimed this is because there are plans to turn the committee into an Indian party after the six state elections - which will be held on Aug 12.
"After the state elections, Punithan would take over (the committee).
"The committee will then be transformed into a party. That is PN's commitment to the Indian community," the source said.
Previously, Malaysiakini reported on speculation that former MIC vice-president C Sivarraajh might head the committee.
However, Sivaraajh - who quit MIC late last month - said he has not decided to join any parties or form his own.
Sivaraajh left MIC on June 27, two weeks after being sacked from the party's central working committee.
Several days later, Punithan also quit MIC.
PN currently consists of Bersatu, PAS, and Gerakan.
Bersatu and PAS have an associate members wing for non-bumiputras and non-Muslims, which Indians primarily lead.
Meanwhile, Gerakan is a multiracial party. - Mkini
