Govt Sticking To Mykad For Ron95 Subsidy Despite Rafizi S Concerns

The government is maintaining its course to use a MyKad system as a means to disburse targeted RON95 subsidies.
Second Finance Minister Amir Hamzah Azizan told the Senate today that they are working with petrol station operators to ensure the system works when targeted subsidies are rolled out by the end of the month.
He was quoted by Bernama as also affirming that Central Database Hub (Padu) data will be used to determine who is eligible for the aid.
On Friday, former economy minister Rafizi Ramli - whose portfolio Amir has assumed - reiterated his call for the government to channel the subsidies through cash transfers instead.
ADS"I have already voiced my concerns about using IC (identity cards) and so on.
"That's why I said from the beginning, the balance between cash transfers using Padu for RM300, RM200, RM400 per month according to the suitability of the family and the operational difficulties of implementing something like this IC (system), it's better to do cash transfers," he had said.
Former economy minister Rafizi RamliHe had said this while commenting on disruptions during the distribution of Rahmah Necessities Aid (Sara).
Glitchy rollout
In early August, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that all adult citizens would be getting a one-off RM100 Sara aid to buy household goods and groceries.
The aid, valid from Aug 31 to Dec 31, is redeemed using the MyKad.
However, the system was not prepared to handle the massive influx of transactions on Aug 31.
The government only took steps to boost capacity the next day.
Rafizi warned that a MyKad system for RON95 subsidies would be susceptible to similar breakdowns.
MCA also expressed concern that the RON95 subsidy rationalisation could face the same glitches as the Sara programme, demanding that the government fine-tune its rollout to avoid system breakdowns. - Mkini
