Electricity Outage Hits Many Parts Of Klang Valley And Several States

Reports are coming through of a wide electricity outage affecting parts of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
Consumers have informed Malaysiakini of blackouts in areas such as Subang, Bandar Menjalara, Sri Hartamas, Kajang, Kepong, Shah Alam, Sungai Besi, Ampang and Bukit Damansara, among others.
The power outage is also said to have affected areas outside the Klang Valley, including the likes of Bentong and Terang in Pahang; Kota Bharu, Kelantan; Butterworth and Bayan Lepas in Penang; and Alor Setar, Kedah.
The Kedah Road Transport Department Facebook page reported that the power outage has forced the department to shut its Alor Star office.
Reports also indicated that mobile usage has seriously been impacted.
The outage came after heavy rain and strong winds hit the nation’s capital.
A notice on Tenaga Nasional's (TNB) Facebook said: “There are currently power outages in several areas.
“Our technical teams are identifying the cause. Efforts are underway to restore supplies.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to consumers during this supply outage.”
Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the TNB customer care hotline told Malaysiakini that an estimated time to resolve the situation is one to three hours, but stressed that it was just an estimate.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), on its Facebook page, also added that the electricity supply in some areas in the Klang Valley is reported to be cut off including Kuala Lumpur.
“This incident has caused traffic lights around KL to not work or experience other malfunctions.
“Road users are asked to be careful to avoid any unwanted incident,” said DBKL, adding that traffic warden officers have been deployed to control and monitor traffic on main roads.
Meanwhile, FMT reported that an aide to Energy and Natural Resources Minister Takiyuddin Hassan said they are looking into the matter and will update accordingly.
In an update at 2.15pm, TNB confirmed that several areas in Peninsular Malaysia had experienced power outages since 12.39 this afternoon involving 2.2GW, which is 10 percent of the entire supply demand.
TNB said that the areas involved included Petaling Jaya, Cheras, Bangi, Bayan Lepas, Seberang Jaya, Panchor and Bandar Indera Mahkota.
"However, supply was fully restored within 20 to 40 minutes in all affected areas except for the affected areas in the Klang Valley.
"The cause of the incident is being identified and efforts are underway to restore the supply," said TNB.
By 3pm, many reports came in that power had been restored in areas such as Kajang, Bangsar, Ampang and Kepong. - Mkini
