PETALING JAYA: The Selangor veterinary services department (DVS) has corrected a state executive council member over the number of pigs culled in the state on suspicion of being infected with African Swine Fever (ASF).
State DVS director Dr Hassuzana Khalil said only 14,000 pigs of various categories were culled, instead of 76,000 as claimed by infrastructure and agriculture exco Izham Hashim, Bernama reported.
Hassuzana said the animals were culled using carbon dioxide gas while the carcasses were buried on pig farms, in line with set guidelines.
She said 58 farms in Sepang and Kuala Langat saw outbreaks of ASF so far and were ordered to cull the animals to curb the disease from spreading.
Earlier, Izham reportedly said 76,000 pigs infected with ASF on 57 farms in Kuala Langat and Sepang were culled by Selangor DVS last week.
Hassuzana said the department had opened seven probe papers following an operation held in areas with the ASF outbreak.
She said pig farms in Selangor were deemed high risk because of inadequate biosecurity measures and their close proximity to one another, making it easier for the disease to spread.
“It is expected that ASF infections will continue since there is currently no available vaccine for the disease,” she said, adding that all farms have been ordered to undergo disinfection to mitigate the spread.
“Farmers are also prohibited from introducing new pigs until the infection is fully eradicated and Selangor is declared ASF-free,” she said. - FMT
