Don T Underestimate People Power Hanipa Warns Govt Ahead Of Rally
Ahead of the student-led anti-graft rally this afternoon, former deputy law minister Hanipa Maidin has warned government leaders against making light of the people.
“Rule No 1 in politics: Never try to be smart by underestimating the people’s power.
“As far as the anti-graft rally is concerned, I think the government is starting to feel the heat. Kudos to rakyat!” said the former Sepang MP in a Facebook post.
The rally called “Himpunan Rakyat Benci Rasuah” will start outside the Sogo shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur at 2.30pm before proceeding to Dataran Merdeka.
Former deputy law minister Hanipa MaidinOrganisers representing 50 organisations previously held a similar New Year’s Eve protest in Kota Kinabalu with the same demands for those in power to urgently act against politically linked corruption cases.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he had no issue with the rally, adding that Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has given the green light for it to proceed.
Saifuddin also said the police would facilitate the rally despite earlier saying otherwise, insisting that the organiser seek permission from the owners of the premises where the rally will be held.
Previously, police claimed the organiser failed to comply with the requirement under the Peaceful Assembly Act for not having the consent of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall.
In recent days, several quarters claimed that some federal government ministers were acting hypocritically as they used to champion the right to peaceful assembly before they came to power. - Mkini
