Anti Graft Rally Hanipa Reminds Anwar Harapan Of Street Protests Past
Former deputy law minister Mohamed Hanipa Maidin has urged the government to ensure that the planned anti-corruption rally in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 25 is allowed to proceed unhindered.
Taking to social media, he reminded Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Pakatan Harapan leaders of their participation in street protests in the past.
“Hopefully, these citizens will be allowed to conduct the rally uninterrupted by the police.
“The coalition government should ensure that the people’s right to hold any peaceful assembly will be duly and jealously protected and safeguarded.
“After all, the current prime minister and many of his current ministers are the graduates of the peaceful assembly school,” said the former Amanah lawmaker.
Getting voices heard
Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that the Sekretariat Rakyat Benci Rasuah will organise the rally to demand swift action against all politicians involved in corruption cases, transparent probes into all corruption allegations, and for all political leaders to affirm their commitment towards ending corruption.
Sekretariat Rakyat Benci Rasuah during a press conference yesterday announcing the rally“Is the government blind or deaf to the people’s voices?” it asked in a statement.
“We are taking to the streets because that is the only way the people’s voices can be heard.
“Recently, the prime minister himself advised that the youth should not be busy defending corrupt leaders. So, here we take up the call,” the secretariat added.
The secretariat condemned both the government and the opposition for their response to major corruption issues.
Pointing to Malaysiakini’s recent exposé of the scandal in Sabah involving several state assemblypersons, it expressed disappointment on how the matter has been swept under the carpet.
The rally will take place at 2.30pm in front of the Sogo shopping mall and participants will march to Dataran Merdeka. - Mkini
