Ham Row Govt Raids Factory To Test Sandwiches For True Contents
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has raided the factory that produced the controversial ham and cheese sandwiches sold at some KK Mart outlets.
It said the raid on Friday - conducted together with the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) - was over the unauthorised use of the halal logo on the company's products.
The ministry did not name the company, but KK Mart had identified it as Shake and Bake Cafe Sdn Bhd.
Earlier, Jakim said the sandwich and the company that manufactured it were not halal-certified.
In its statement today, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry said the halal logo that the manufacturer used on those sandwiches was actually certified for use by another company that is no longer operational.
It said the non-operational company had sold its business to the company raided on Friday.
Further, the halal certification for that company had expired on Oct 15, 2023.
What’s actually in it?
Halal certification and the use of the halal logo are heavily regulated and do not only cover the ingredients used.
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry will be sending samples of the sandwiches to the Chemistry Department to determine the true ingredients used, it added.
KK Mart had said that Shake and Bake Cafe - which was also not authorised to use KK Mart's logo - had used halal-certified chicken ham to make the controversial sandwiches.
Malaysiakini has learned that Shake and Bake Cafe is owned by a Perak MCA division leader.
Malaysiakini is attempting to contact the owner for comment. - Mkini
