PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak today sought to dispel the notion by Pakatan Harapan that Barisan Nasional leaders had robbed money from Malay institutions, and called for parliamentary investigations into these allegations
He said not one BN leader had been charged in court after the 2018 general election for allegedly stealing money from Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) as was claimed
Instead, it was PH that had reduced its allocation to Mara by as much as RM100 million, he said on Facebook
He said PH had also accused BN of stealing money from the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation, but noted that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said there was not enough evidence for further action
As for Tabung Haji, Najib said the former chairman of the pilgrim funds and his brother had been charged in a case involving a highway project, but it was not related to TH
“The most serious claim is that Umno did ‘kerja zalim’ like overpaying RM4.2 billion in grants (hibah) to Tabung Haji contributors,” Najib added, saying this was based on an audit by an external firm which was contradictory to the findings of the National Audit Department
Najib similarly questioned who had really “destroyed” TH, saying the value of its assets fell by RM10.8 billion after the general election because of the severe stock market collapse “in PH’s hands”
For Federal Land Development Authority (Felda), Najib said former Felda chairman Isa Samad, who is also a former Umno leader, has only been charged with accepting bribes amounting to RM3 million in connection with a hotel purchase in Sarawak for RM160 million
He said in Isa’s case, Mahathir’s political secretary Muhammad Zahid Arip, whose name is mentioned in corruption charges against Isa, has yet to be charged. He asked why this was the case
“PH accuses Malay institutions of being corrupt (‘rosak’) during BN’s time, but what I see is that (in PH’s administration), Mara’s budget has been cut, the Tabung Haji hibah is the lowest in history, the haj quota is also down as Saudi Arabia no longer approves extra quotas to the PH government and Felda settlers are suffering after GE14
“Who actually ruined them?” he asked
Najib once again called on the government to form a royal commission of inquiry into these institutions as was promised by PH and was supposed to be fulfilled within the first 100 days of it assuming power
He said at the very least, investigations by the parliamentary watchdog Public Accounts Committee should commence into these agencies
