Cops Begin Probe On 3 Facebook Users Over Insults To Islam Prophet

Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun.KUALA LUMPUR: Police have opened three investigation papers in connection with postings which insulted Prophet Muhammad
Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun, in a statement, said the cases were being investigated under the Penal Code and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998
“An investigation paper was opened against Facebook account user Foo Sing Wai for uploading words and infographics insulting Prophet Muhammad and his wife Siti Aisyah,” he said adding that 478 police reports were lodged against this person
He said the suspect, aged 68, was arrested on Feb 19 and was held in remand until Feb 22
According to Fuzi, the suspect was released on police bail last Friday because of his age and health condition
He said the police also received 11 reports against another Facebook user Sarkar Tanesan for insulting postings on the prophet and Muslims
The person behind the account, a 21-year-old suspect, was arrested last Thursday and is in remand until tomorrow, he added
Fuzi said there were 16 police reports lodged against another Facebook account user Sally Yen over similar remarks in 2013
The case had been classified as NFA (no further action) as the account holder could not be ascertained by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), he added
However, he said the case was reopened following two new reports lodged over the posting which was viralled again
Efforts are being made to identify the Facebook account holder and also those who viralled the posting again, he added
He advised the public against making, disseminating or sharing statements or postings that could undermine public order as well as inter-religious harmony in the country. - FMT
