(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Badminton legend Lee Chong Wei has hit out at netizens who launched harsh criticisms at mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying after they crashed out of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Taking to social media, Lee said he was dismayed to see the comments by some netizens that he deemed abusive, adding that he empathised with his former teammates.
“All I want to say is I know these players. They went to the court with only one aim, one goal: To win the game for the flag that’s on their chest, to make us proud.
“No one wants to go to the court and lose. But that’s reality, there will be a loser and a winner in every match. Sometimes it’s just not your day. Those watching from the TV already feel ‘heart attack’, what more the players?
Lee Chong Wei.“Shouldn’t we continue supporting them? These players brought you joy before. Don’t mock and desert them when they lose a game,” he said in a Facebook post.
At the end of his post, he addressed Chan and Goh, telling his juniors that he and “real Malaysians” were proud of them despite their loss.
Chan and Goh, are currently ranked 7th in the world. They won the silver medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro but are out of the running for the quarter-finals in Tokyo after losing 12-21, 15-21 to Germany’s Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Hertrich. Yesterday, they lost their first match by 18-21, 21-10, 16-21 to Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet. - FMT
