Caucus On Political Financing Seeks Meeting With Law Minister

The All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia (APPGM) on Political Financing has expressed its wish to meet de facto Law Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar soon to discuss their proposals.
In a statement, the APPGM said they are currently working on a draft law and sought Putrajaya's support to have a bill tabled.
The APPGM members said they have agreed on several basic principles such as banning foreign financing, limiting donations made by individuals or companies, and banning donations by GLCs or organisations with a conflict of interest.
The APPGM said it had met twice so far and its last meeting yesterday also involved several think tanks and interest groups.
Members of the APPGM are Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas), Fahmi Fadzil (Harapan-Lembah Pantai), Wong Shu Qi (Harapan-Kluang), Wilfred Madius Tangau (Harapan-Tuaran), Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar), and Mukhriz Mahathir (Pejuang-Jerlun).
Similar to parliamentary caucuses, APPGMs are not officially recognised by Parliament and are groupings of MPs with similar interests and are often bi-partisan.
Notably, Ahmad Fadhli is the only government MP on this APPGM. He is also the PAS Youth chief.
Pakatan Harapan promised political financing laws as part of its 2018 election pledges but it was not implemented during its 22-month rule.
Post-Harapan-era prime ministers did not make similar pledges. Political financing is also not part of Harapan's confidence-and-supply agreement with Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Calls to regulate political financing intensified during the Najib Abdul Razak administration, during which Najib claimed he received billions from Saudi Arabia as contributions to his war chest ahead of the 2013 general election. - Mkini
