Anwar Sports Green Ribbon Pin Wants Mental Health Stigma To End
PARLIAMENT | Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim turned up in Parliament with a green ribbon fastened to his chest in conjunction with World Mental Health Day 2023.
During the Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat, he said the public must stop the stigma associated with mental problems.
“Mental health belongs to all, stop the stigma. The green ribbon I wear is an international symbol of mental health. Happy World Mental Health Day 2023,” he said.
According to Bernama, several members of Parliament were also seen wearing green ribbons as a sign of support for the mental health awareness campaign.
When tabling the motion on the 12th Malaysia Plan Mid-Term Review in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar announced that the government would establish a mental health institute to deal with the increasingly worrying issue.
He said the move was to strengthen efforts to address the problems by coordinating the efforts of government, private sector and civil society organisations.
In May, the Dewan Rakyat passed the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2023. This is a component of legislative changes to decriminalise attempted suicide in Malaysia.
The Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2023 empowers crisis intervention officers to apprehend individuals with or who may have a mental disorder that poses a threat to themselves or others, or who are attempting to commit suicide.
In the 2023 budget, the government allocated RM36.3 billion to the Health Ministry, of which RM34.5 million was for the establishment of the National Centre of Excellence for Mental Health and the strengthening of mental health and psychosocial support services.
