Mca Wants Anwar To Ditch Finance Portfolio Sack Underperformers
Amid speculation of an impending cabinet reshuffle, MCA has urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to relinquish his Finance Ministry position to focus on administering the country as the head honcho.
Alternatively, the party’s spokesperson Mike Chong said Anwar should appoint a second finance minister who could focus on economic matters, so Anwar can perform effectively as prime minister in formulating policy and ensuring its coordination and consistency.
He said the move is necessary as people are saddled with a rising cost of living without a commensurate increase in income, yet the government’s plans to boost the economy seem to lack direction.
“In view of this, we call on the prime minister to consider taking up the afore-mentioned options to better focus on solving national economic dilemmas,” he said in a statement today.
Chong, who was recently elected as the MCA Youth deputy chief, also proposed that Anwar should remove Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli and Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu for supposedly courting controversy and failing to perform their duties.
In the Chinese-language version of his statement, Chong also similarly took aim at Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming.
He claimed Rafizi had failed to improve the country’s economy and people’s lives, and his only suggestion was to tell people to cook their meals at home instead of eating out.
For the record, in his interview with Malaysiakini on Sept 12, Rafizi did not urge people to cook their own meals.
He said people have become “addicted” to eating out which diminished their limited disposable income, but blamed it on policy failures of previous administrations rather than the people themselves.
As for Mohamad, Chong said Malaysia has seen shortages of food items like eggs and rice under his watch.
“Not only did he botch preventing these problems from occurring, he failed to address the sharp price hikes in people’s daily essentials,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chong said Nga should be dropped from the cabinet line-up for continuing to act like an opposition politician even though he is now a government minister, such as by body-shaming the late Hong Kong actress Lydia Shum during a ceramah in the Pelangai by-election campaign on Sept 22, and by putting the DAP logo on mock cheques when presenting government funds to several schools.
“He has severely tarnished the cabinet’s image and is one of the ministers that must be considered for replacement,” Chong said. - Mkini
