Students Unfazed By Rm5 Million Threat Plan Second Sabah Anti Graft Rally

Another anti-corruption rally is being planned to show that Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students are determined to voice out against graft.
ADSGempur Rasuah Sabah coordinator Muhamad Fadhil Muhamad Kasim told Malaysiakini that the rally’s organisers were unfazed by threats of an RM5 million lawsuit by a pro-government group.
“We believe that the fight against corruption is the shared responsibility of every Malaysian, especially students as agents of change in the nation. 
“We are not intimidated, let alone moved away from this holy and pure struggle,” the Suara Mahasiswa UMS president said.
Earlier today, Sekretariat Gerakan Bangkit Sabahan announced that it would file an RM5 million lawsuit against Gempur Rasuah Sabah rally organisers and participants, including the UMS student group and artist Fahmi Reza.
The group, aligned with Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor, said its legal team is currently gathering information to facilitate the delivery of letters of demand.
‘Weak and cowardly’
Meanwhile, Fadhli said that criticism of those in power is a fundamental practice of a healthy democracy.
“Suing students as much as RM5 million only because they voiced out against leakages and misconduct is a weak and cowardly act by the evil apologists of corruptors.
“Corruptors steal hundreds of millions while ordinary students are threatened with an RM5 million lawsuit,” he lamented.
On Monday, the organiser of the Gempur Rasuah Sabah rally filed a report against pro-Hajiji organisation Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia over claims that protesters were paid to provoke unrest.
The anti-corruption rally organiser has repeatedly denied having links with political parties.
The Sabah state government has drawn interest after a businessperson revealed a series of videos and Whatsapp messages accusing the administration of corruption in issuing mineral exploration licences.
The appointment of Musa Aman, the state’s longest-serving chief minister, as governor had also courted flak from various quarters. - Mkini
