Akmal Called To Facilitate Probe Not Arrested Pm
Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh was not arrested but called up to facilitate an investigation, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
“I don’t think he was arrested but was just called in (for questioning),” Anwar was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.
It was reported earlier today that police have detained Akmal upon his arrival in Kota Kinabalu this morning.
Akmal confirmed the arrest on his Facebook page, saying he was held despite being scheduled to record his statement at the Dang Wangi police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.
Akmal had spent over two hours providing his statement before he was released later.
Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal SalehBernama reported Akmal as saying that the statement included details on police reports concerning his recent talks in Kelantan and is unrelated to any activities or matters in Sabah.
“I am in Sabah today to attend an Umno Youth programme in Beaufort and an iftar event similar to those we hosted in other states before. Upon arriving at Kota Kinabalu International Airport around 10.15am, I was requested to go to the Kota Kinabalu district police headquarters.
“I was not informed that I couldn’t enter Sabah; all this is related to issues there (peninsula). I am ready to fully cooperate with the police,” he told reporters after providing his statement.
However, Sinar Harian later reported that Akmal was called back to the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters again in the afternoon.
The report believed that Akmal was required to answer a few more extra questions from the police.
No compromise on 3R issues
Meanwhile, Anwar also said the government will not tolerate or compromise with anyone, including political parties, who are playing up race, religion, and royalty (3R) issues.
The prime minister reiterated that appropriate action, including investigations and criminal charges, against those who challenge the Constitution and the rights of both Muslims and non-Muslims, according to Bernama
“This is important for us to understand… issues that can trigger problems like selling socks imprinted with the words ‘Allah’. This is a serious issue in Islam, so we detain, charge, and move forward.
“We should not use this particular issue or other issues to stoke hatred or create unnecessary problems that can disrupt the peace and harmony of the nation. This is important, be it Muslims or non-Muslims.
“I must stress that we will not compromise or tolerate issues that challenge the royal institution,” he said in response to a question about Akmal’s status. - Mkini
