State youth and sports committee chairman Najwan Halimi, who is also the state disaster management committee chairman, said the directive must be implemented promptly.
This is to prevent flood incidents in non-hotspot areas, such as the recent case in Ulu Bernam, Hulu Selangor, which affected many families.
“Based on recent incidents, all local authorities have been ordered to take immediate action to manage drainage systems that require attention, particularly in areas at risk of water logging or flash floods during the rainy season,” he said at a press conference on the organisation of Sukma 2026 in Shah Alam today.
Najwan was commenting on measures taken by the state government following floods that struck several areas two days ago.
A total of 43 families from more than five affected villages are now housed at two temporary evacuation centres (PPS) – Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Sekolah Sungai Selisik and Dewan Orang Ramai Ulu Bernam.
Najwan said he and the disaster management team had visited nine districts across Selangor last week, meeting community leaders and village heads involved in a community-based disaster risk management training programme.
He said the training was conducted in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma).
He said those who received the training would have the basic knowledge to handle disasters in their areas while awaiting assistance from the higher authorities to arrive. - FMT
