Zara Shouted I Didn T Steal It In Her Dorm Room Coroner S Court H
KOTA KINABALU: The 18th witness, also the ninth child, to testify in the inquest into the death of Zara Quairina Mahathir told the Coroner’s Court on Wednesday (Oct 8) that she would write in her diary when she was stressed, Sinar Harian reports.
The witness provided this testimony during the 19th day of the inquest before Coroner Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan, the Malay language daily reported.
Lawyer Joan Goh said that the witness knew about the diary because she had seen Zara writing in it at the dormitory.
"The witness read Zara’s diary only once with her permission. As far as the witness remembers, Zara wrote about missing her old friends from primary school, but could not recall their names.
"According to the witness, Zara would write in her diary when she was ‘stressed’ or under pressure, as her writing became faster. The witness did not know the cause of Zara’s stress or where she kept her diary," she told reporters at the Kota Kinabalu Court Complex on Wednesday.
Goh added that the witness said Zara Qairina never complained about any issues at the dorm, such as bullying, academic pressure, or fatigue.
"Zara had no conflicts with other students at the school. The witness also had no conflicts with Zara and never saw her being scolded or harassed by other students," she said.
Furthermore, the witness said that on the night of July 15, she saw Zara walking towards another room but did not know why she was called there.
"The witness was told that a student’s belongings were missing. Then, the witness and dorm mates checked Zara’s belongings and found a Jalur Gemilang pin with another student’s name in Zara’s place.
"The witness did not know what happened in the next dorm as she was not there. After meeting seniors in the next room, when Zara returned to the dorm at around 11pm, the witness noticed Zara seemed angry.
"Zara walked into the dorm, closed her locker, then lay on the floor crying in front of her wardrobe, shouting ‘I didn’t steal it, damn it’. Before the witness fell asleep, Zara was still on the floor. It was the first time the witness saw Zara in such a state," she said.
Additionally, the witness mentioned that after the dorm lights were out, she saw Zara sitting in front of her wardrobe and then coming to the end of the room asking to borrow scissors from her and several other students.
"The witness could not lend scissors to Zara because she didn’t have any. After that, Zara left the dorm, and the witness did not know what happened next as she went to sleep," she said.
Goh also said that the witness noticed Zara was in the dorm at around 4pm the same day.
"Zara seemed quiet, gloomy, not speaking, and went downstairs alone. Since the witness and Zara were in different classes, the witness didn’t know how Zara was during the ‘prep night’. The witness didn’t approach Zara because she seemed in a ‘bad mood’ and was afraid of being scolded," she said.
Meanwhile, Goh noted that the witness also testified about losing money in the dorm and explained how she knew the money found was hers.
"The witness testified that she had lost money in the dorm and informed the seniors at that time. The seniors then asked for permission to check each locker and found some money in Zara’s locker.
"The witness was asked how she knew the money was hers, and she replied that the senior asked for the features of the missing money. The money was three RM10 notes," she said.
Goh, along with her team, Datuk Ram Singh, represented one of the five teenagers charged in Zara Qairina’s case, attending the inquest as interested parties.
The late Zara Qairina was found unconscious under her school dormitory building early on July 16 and was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital the following day. - Star
