Why Is Zamri S Offensive Post Still There Asks Rayer
Jelutong MP RSN Rayer has questioned the authorities on their inaction against Muslim preacher Zamri Vinoth over an allegedly offensive and provocative social media post insulting Hinduism and Thaipusam.
In a statement this morning, Rayer expressed concern that more than 48 hours had passed since Zamri’s post was published, yet no action had been taken to remove it.
“I have checked on Facebook and I am also told that this very provocative and offensive posting of Zamri (above, right) is still on his page and can be viewed by the public.
“Why haven’t the authorities, the police and the MCMC blocked or removed this posting until now?” asked the DAP leader.
Rayer said that Zamri’s remarks had not only insulted Hindu religious practices but also risked exacerbating racial and religious tensions.
He said this is because Zamri had linked the Thaipusam chant of “vel vel” to the 2018 death of firefighter Adib Kassim, who sustained fatal injuries during a riot outside a Hindu temple in Seafield, Subang Jaya.
Deceased firefighter Adib KassimThe MP confirmed that he had lodged a police report against Zamri and noted that multiple reports had been filed nationwide.
He stressed the need for swift action to prevent potential unrest, warning that failure to address such inflammatory remarks could jeopardise national security and harmony.
Imitating Hindu practices
Zamri had claimed in a social post that people do not find it insulting when “Hindus chant ‘vel vel’ and dance as if they are possessed (macam orang kena rasuk) while intoxicated (mabuk todi).”
He argued that others were merely imitating Hindu practices, yet Hindus take offence when this happens.
The preacher also posted an image with the caption that read chanting “vel vel” does not lead to a loss of life like what happened to firefighter Adib Kassim, who died during a riot outside a Hindu temple in Subang Jaya, Selangor, in 2018.
The chant “vel vel” invokes the Hindu deity Lord Muruga and is often chanted during Thaipusam when a person is bearing a kavadi.
Zamri was commenting on the incident involving three radio announcers from Era FM being investigated over a TikTok video with one of them dancing while another chanted “vel vel”.
The DJs, who have since apologised, were also suspended pending police and MCMC investigations.
Meanwhile, MIC Youth chief Arvind Krishnan urged police to break their silence on Zamri’s alleged misdeeds, insisting that he should not be given free rein to spread hatred.
Arvind cautioned that a lack of stern action against the preacher will send a negative message that anyone can insult other religions without facing consequences.
He added that he has instructed for a police report to be lodged against another individual, Vijayan Savarinathan, who was said to have insulted Islam on social media.
“We are committed to ensuring that anyone who attempts to disrupt national harmony will be brought to face justice.
“Police must start taking drastic measures so as to establish a reference point for similar incidents in the future,” he added in a statement today. - Mkini
