Meta Told To Remove Zamri S Post On March 5 Mcmc Clarifies
MCMC clarified that it had asked Meta to take down controversial preacher Zamri Vinoth’s Facebook post - that compared kavadi bearers during Thaipusam to individuals who are possessed or intoxicated - on March 5.
However, it said the decision to remove the content - found to contain elements of offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA) - ultimately fell on the platform.
“The decision to remove the content is made by the platform subject to its assessment of the justifications provided and the platform’s community guidelines,” the commission told Malaysiakini today.
Meta ultimately removed the post today.
Under social media licensing requirements in force since Jan 1, social media platforms that meet user thresholds - including Meta - are required to comply with the CMA.
However, it is not clear if Meta and its platforms have been licensed. On Jan 17, Meta said that it was in the final stages of the licensing process.

Preacher Zamri VinothZamri’s post was on the incident involving three radio announcers from Era FM investigated over a TikTok video showing one of them dancing while another chanted “vel vel” - often heard during Thaipusam when a person is bearing a kavadi.
MCMC, in its statement to Malaysiakini, confirmed that a probe is underway by both the commission and police.
It said Zamri - identified only as “the suspect” in the MCMC reply - was summoned to be questioned by police in Perlis on March 6.
“Police have also seized the device used to make the Facebook post, with MCMC providing technical assistance to facilitate investigation,” the commission added. - Mkini
