Dr Mahathir Mohamad says while there are disagreements among ministers at times, there are no misunderstandings or restrictions in carrying out their duties.PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today praised his administration saying it has achieved a lot of success just 18 months after Pakatan Harapan formed the government, noting the smooth transition
He said unlike in other countries, the change in the government went without a hitch and according to the rule of law
“In other countries, when there is a change of government, there will be riots, street demonstrations and strikes. Some witnessed civil war,” he told reporters here
Also present were several Cabinet members, including Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng and Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu
Mahathir also said while there were disagreements among ministers at times, there were no misunderstandings or restrictions in carrying out their duties
“The Cabinet functions as well as we can expect. Yes, we argue, but we can sit down and come to a consensus,” he said and joked that no one dared go against him
The government, Mahathir said, had also expelled many in the civil service who were involved in graft
He went on to say that no one questioned the current government and his administration was well-received overseas
Mahathir said that the current government has administered the country “till the point people respect us”
“They don’t call us a kleptocracy any more. They accept us as their equal,” he said, adding that the other nations now paid attention to what Malaysia has to say
Mahathir said that many nations have approached Malaysia to learn from it and said this was evidence that the country had set a good example
When asked what was the biggest promised fulfilled, Mahathir said it was the pledge to stay as a coalition, although he admitted that “it wasn’t easy”
“We have different ideas. But we stick together.”Mahathir also said that all promises made in the manifesto will be implemented but slowly, and it depended on the circumstances
“But our priority is corruption. We have enacted laws to combat graft and set up new agencies. We are very serious about it.” - FMT
