Wan Saiful Accuses Azmin Of Desperate Move With New Bersatu Circular
Sacked Bersatu member Wan Saiful Wan Jan has accused secretary-general Azmin Ali of issuing a party circular without approval from the party’s top leadership council, calling it a “desperate move” to exert control amid waning influence.
In a statement today, the Tasek Gelugor MP claimed that the new circular dated Oct 25 was never approved by the Bersatu supreme council.
“As far as I know, there was no meeting that approved this circular. Perhaps Azmin has introduced a new procedure where circulars no longer need to be tabled before the supreme council first. Never mind - they have the power,” he claimed.
Wan Saiful (above, left) described the circular - which prohibits party members from associating with individuals punished by the disciplinary board - as an attempt by Azmin to consolidate control.
ADS“This circular is a desperate move by Azmin. When one lacks influence and support, all that remains is the use of authority,” he said.
Malaysiakini earlier reported that the internal document, verified by a Bersatu division leader who received a copy, stated: "Any party member who conspires with and supports certain individuals who have been disciplined by the Disciplinary Board is clearly violating the Party Constitution and the Code of Conduct for Members.”
Unprecedented
Wan Saiful claimed such restrictions were unprecedented in Bersatu’s history.
“Never in Bersatu’s history have members been prohibited from meeting those facing disciplinary action. Moreover, the decision has yet to be finalised by the Appeals Board,” he said.

He further questioned why Azmin did not apply the same rule to party president Muhyiddin Yassin, who had previously met with former Bersatu founding chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his son, Mukhriz Mahathir - both of whom were expelled from the party in 2020.
“If it is indeed forbidden to meet members facing disciplinary action, why didn’t Azmin bring this up with Muhyiddin when he himself met Mahathir and Mukhriz?
“Is it now the case in Bersatu that party rules no longer apply to the president and those around him? Or was this new rule issued so hastily that they forgot even the president himself had violated it?” he asked.
Contacted for clarification, Wan Saiful told Malaysiakini he was referring to an Oct 14 roundtable chaired by Muhyiddin - attended by Mahathir and Mukhriz representing Pejuang - as well as other Perikatan Nasional components and non-government parties approached to be a part of a united opposition.
On Oct 14, Bersatu had sacked Wan Saiful as well as four party division chiefs, and suspended its Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal for one term. - Mkini
