Vocal Prof James Chin Remains Steadfast In Airing His Views Despite Dumb Academic Label

“RACIST, dumb and useless”.
These are just some of the brickbats that have been hurled at renowned political analyst Prof James Chin – which isn’t really a surprise – given his outspoken views, especially on racial inequality in Malaysia.
The critiques have been steadily building since the Asian Studies director at Tasmania University insisted that there is a “shadow quota” at work when addressing the recent furore over STPM high achiever Edward Wong’s failure to get a place in Universiti Malaya.

Most recently, the Senior Fellow at the Jeffrey Cheah Institute claimed that the heat is being turned up even more since he commented on a movement for greater autonomy that is gaining traction among certain quarters in Sabah and Sarawak.

Highlighting Awesome TV’s Berita 7.57 broadcast as a leading culprit in the media campaign to discredit him, Chin reminded audiences that this was the same TV station that warned Malays their power was being taken away by the Chinese lest they exercise their voting rights in the run-up to the 2022 national polls.
The Sarawak-born academician went on to sarcastically remarked that he was being made out to be the “grand master of behind Sarawak’s plot to grab power from Malaya” while reaching out to the citizens of the Borneo states to support him in truth-telling.
Many did indeed take up the expert on Southeast Asia governance’s call by stating clearly not only their support but were in agreement with his stance to defend the sovereignty of Sabah and Sarawak.

The so-called news report was also said to be reflective of a “colonialist mentality” as many are unable discern that the two Bornean states are NOT part of “Tanah Melayu”.

One commenter simply wondered just how such reportage could even be classified as “news”. She hoped ordinary rakyat are intelligent enough to discern as it was nothing more than a hate campaign “to incite racial division”.

Aside from Awesome TV’s seriously questionable news reporting, other examples of mud throwing could be seen on social media which can be taken as signs of a concerted campaign to discredit Chin.
One such example is Fendi (@fendithehunk) who simply labelled Chin on X “the dumbest academician in Malaysian history” sans justification. The poster further claimed that he is also an academic but did not provide any form of credentials.
The lack of substance in the ensuing barrage of criticisms levelled at Chin could be seen from insults hurled at the Australia-based academic in various comments on the post.

“Racist” and “sh*t-stirrer” were among the choice insults but again none seem capable of engaging with any kind of reasoned argument besides name-calling.

The manner in which the academic is being portrayed does hint at a concerted smear campaign. The complete lack of substance to counter Chin’s arguments is a sure sign that he is ruffling feathers.
The inability of the far-right to rise above racist invective is evidence that uncomfortable questions are being asked.
Alas, there will be many who will swallow the untruths and demeaning labels due to the heady and intoxicating mixture of paranoia, sense of entitlement and racial supremacy. – Focus Malaysia
