Umno To Go Ahead With General Assembly This Weekend
Umno has received approval from the National Security Council (MKN) to hold its annual general assembly this weekend, party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said.
(FMT) – In a tweet, he said attendance was capped at 50% capacity in Dewan Merdeka, which has a maximum seating of 3,000, at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (formerly known as Putra World Trade Centre, or PWTC).
The general assembly would also be subject to the standard operating procedures (SOP) under the conditional movement control order (CMCO) implemented in Kuala Lumpur, including the wearing of face masks and physical distancing.
Previously, Ahmad was reported as saying that the general assembly would be carried out through a combination of physical and virtual meetings.
The highly-anticipated meet is expected to see the proposal for Umno to cut ties with PPBM being discussed.
Between late December and early January, 191 Umno divisions held their respective annual general meetings with a vast majority passing resolutions for the party to withdraw its cooperation with PPBM.
The Umno Supreme Council then said it would finalise any decision on the party’s stance on PPBM at the annual general assembly, which was twice postponed.
However, this has been superseded by the outcome of a meeting by the party’s main decision-making body on Feb 19, in which they decided that Umno would not cooperate with PPBM in the next general election (GE15) and that the party would only work with the Perikatan Nasional-led government until Parliament was dissolved.
Sabah Umno and Perlis Umno have since declared they will go against the decision by the Supreme Council and continue their cooperation with PPBM ahead of GE15.
