Ummah Thirty Ngos To Give Memo To Pm For Waytha S Sacking
About 30 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are expected to hand a memorandum to the government calling for the sacking of P Waythamoorthy as a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department
The memorandum will be passed after the "Justice for Adib" solidarity gathering outside the Putrajaya mosque tomorrow afternoon, said Gerakan Pembela Ummah (Ummah) secretariat chief Aminuddin Yahaya (above)
Ummah is an umbrella group for Muslim organisations and which had also organised the "thanksgiving" rally following the government's move to not ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd) in Kuala Lumpur earlier this month
According to Aminuddin, the group will gather after Friday prayers at the Putrajaya mosque and then march to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), located about 450 metres away
"Tomorrow, after prayers, we will hand over the memorandum. We expect many people will turn up as it's a Friday and working day (in Putrajaya)
"The death of Adib is very serious. Thus we want to send a memorandum seeking Waythamoorthy's sacking," he said
He was referring to firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim who died last Monday after being allegedly assaulted by rioters outside the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya on Nov 27
Calls for Waythamoorthy to be axed from his position have grown louder following Adib's death
The 24-year-old was part of the Fire and Rescue Department team deployed in response to vehicles being torched by rioters outside the Sri Maha Mariamman temple on Nov 27. According to police, he was dragged out of his vehicle and assaulted
Waythamoorthy is accused of having flamed tensions when he and three other ministers chastised the police for the latter's initial observation that fighting at the temple was between two Indian groups
Last night, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that it is up for him to decidewhether Waythamoorthy should stay or go and that so far, he felt "okay" with the minister's performance
Aminuddin said that although the premier was satisfied with Waythamoorthy's performance, ultimately, the rakyat were the ones who should decide
"We will keep pushing until Waythamoorthy goes because he is not suitable to be the minister in charge of unity," he said.Other NGOs expected to be present tomorrow are Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma), the Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM), and Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia (Gamis) among others. -Mkini
