Sibu police chief Assistant Commissioner Zulkipli Suhaili said police received reports of a commotion involving several individuals at the Jalan Cross night market at 8.46pm.
Policemen were dispatched to the scene immediately.
"On arriving at the scene, they found an intoxicated man who had been disturbing business operators and damaged vendors' stalls. In response, several individuals present at the scene retaliated by assaulting the suspect, resulting in injuries to him.
Zulkipli said this incident had also been caught on video and has become viral on social media.
He said the Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) from the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division apprehended the suspect, a 31-year-old Indonesian national and two others age 31 and 35 also believed to be involved in the commotion.
"Preliminary checks revealed that none of the three suspects had prior criminal records.
All three suspects will be remanded for further investigation," he said adding that efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects.
The case is being investigated under Sections 427/147 of the Penal Code for vandalism and rioting in public. Those found guilty could face up to two years in prison, a fine, or both.
Zulkipli also urged the public not to speculate on the incident, as it could disrupt police investigations.
