Test If Internet Speed As Good As Telcos Claim Annuar Orders Mcmc
Communications and multimedia minister Annuar Musa said he would not hesitate to issue fresh licences if telcos refused to take up the 5G rollout by Digital Nasional Berhad by June 30.PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been ordered to carry out nationwide mapping to measure the actual levels of internet speed.
Communications and multimedia minister Annuar Musa has directed them to compare these speeds with reports prepared by telecommunication companies (telcos), Bernama reported.
He said there were still many people, especially in rural areas, who complained about the quality of services provided by the telcos.
“I want MCMC to do the performance audit of the level of achievement and compare with what the telcos have done,” he said while speaking at the ministry’s 2021 excellence service awards ceremony here today.
Annuar Musa.Annuar said the agencies under his ministry, especially MCMC, needed to take a new and more aggressive approach to solve problems faced by the people.
“I’m not anti-profit, it’s okay to make a profit but please invest back and fix the problems of the people in the village who climb trees or hills just to get internet access. How much longer do we want to hear about this problem?”
Annuar said his ministry had received a lot of feedback about the quality of internet access and mobile broadband services. Some areas only have services from certain telcos.
He said MCMC must ensure the gap between public interest and business considerations of telcos was not too wide. He said telcos were encouraged to invest in upgrading their existing towers.
On the rolling out of the 5G network by Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), Annuar said the government could not force telcos to join.
“If the number of companies is not enough, I will issue licences to new players. I’m not going to wait for anybody. I did say, please think about national interest.
“We want to roll out 5G according to plan and the government has given space for existing players to come on board. We have set a deadline (June 30), which we feel is more than enough.” - FMT
