Taxi Licences Car Rental Permits Now Open To Public Loke
PARLIAMENT | The public can now apply for taxi licences and individual permits for car rental through the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad).
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat today, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said this initiative is to resolve issues of taxi and car rental permits, which were leased to companies, that previously arose.
“This is also to create a competitive and progressive environment in the taxi industry,” Loke said during the winding-up speech of his ministry in the Parliament today.
“In addition, the ministry also intends to reopen applications to companies for new taxi and car rental permits under the improved model.
“This will be able to improve the quality of taxi and car rental services as well as to provide job opportunities, as taxi drivers, to those who can’t afford to own their own vehicles.”
Transport Minister Anthony LokeUp until November last year, there were a total of 37,000 registered taxis and rental cars and 101,000 e-hailing vehicles registered with 28 e-hailing operators in the country.
In a related development, the DAP lawmaker said the study on the empowerment of the taxi and e-hailing industry will be implemented in the future.
This, he said, is to assess the current demand of the industry and the feasibility to implement improvement proposals through a more comprehensive data analysis.
“However, appropriate financial allocation and the involvement of third parties in carrying out the study are needed to ensure that an inclusive and accurate improvement initiative can be implemented.” - Mkini
