The Armed Forces in a statement today said a 72-men team comprising 12 officers and 60 medical support staff from the Royal Medical Corps will be flown to the district aboard Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) flights this Saturday (October 17).
The team, which will cooperate with the Health Ministry and placed under the management of the Tawau Hospital, would be deployed for a period of three months at the field hospital.
"The team comprises six medical experts, six medical officers, a pharmacist, a hospital administration officer, 62 paramedics and supporting elements.
"For the initial stage, the field hospital will be operating from the Tawau Sports Complex and has the capacity of 100 beds including four beds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to treat non-Covid-19 cases.
"And at any time, the capabilities and facilities (at the field hospital) could be upgraded with operation theatre and High Dependency Unit. This will enable the Tawau Hospital to focus on providing treatments for Covid-19 patients," the statement read.
Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Sunday had announced that the field hospital in Tawau, Sabah is expected to commence its operation this week.
The Senior Defence Minister said the government, together with the Defence Ministry, was in the process of mobilising all resources needed for the operation of the field hospital.
The Armed Forces' medical service, the statement said, is also involved with the establishment of the Covid-19 temporary treatment centre at the Pokok Sena Prison in Kedah to treat inmates who tested positive for the virus.
On other matters, the Armed Forces has mobilised 1,780 military personnel from the army, navy and air force under Ops Penawar to assist other enforcement agencies to conduct roadblocks and mobile patrol vehicle rounds during the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) in Selangor, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur as well as throughout the Targeted Enhanced MCO (TEMCO) in some parts of Sabah.
"A total of 396 military personnel were deployed in Selangor, followed by 225 in Kuala Lumpur as well as Putrajaya.
"As for Sabah, a total of 165 personnel were deployed to various parts of the state especially in the Tawau, Semporna, Tambunan, Keningau and Lahad Datu districts.
"The Armed Forces has also deployed 73 personnel to conduct roadblocks, make rounds and enhance security at the areas within the Pokok Sena prison," the statement said. - NST
