Tar Umt Justifies 10 Tuition Fee Hike Amid Rising Costs
Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology said it will provide support for local students with financial aid, scholarships and study loans. (TAR pic)PETALING JAYA: The 10% increase in tuition fees for local students enrolling in diploma or bachelor degree programmes starting from the June 2024 intake is necessary amid escalating operating costs, says Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT).
TAR UMT confirmed the fee adjustment, which also applies to students progressing from foundation or diploma studies.
“The tuition fee increase is necessary for our ongoing commitment to provide affordable quality education in a more sustainable way in view of rising operational costs,” it said in a statement today.
Despite that, TAR UMT said it remained committed to supporting local students in need through financial aid, scholarships and study loans.
The university said the fee hike also extended to international students progressing to higher-level programmes.
TAR UMT’s response follows a student union’s condemnation of the university management’s decision to raise tuition fees.
The Student Front of TAR UMT said the decision was “sudden and one-sided”, given that this is the fourth increase in five years.
The student body also expressed dismay at the lack of consultation, saying the decision contradicts the university’s core values of affordable education.
“The decision’s lack of transparency and accountability undermines the trust and collaboration that should exist between the university management and the students,” it said.
The student body further called for transparency regarding how the additional revenue will be utilised as students have the right to know how their funds contribute to education and student services.
“We request assurances regarding the benefits and improvements that students can expect following this fee hike,” it said.
“The university must outline specific measures and enhancements that will justify the increased financial burden on students and their families.” - FMT
