Amid Boycott Wars Mcd Exec Raises Eyebrows With Sedition Charge Post
Fast food franchising brand McDonald's had been badly hit by the recently renewed calls for Malaysians to boycott companies that allegedly fund Israel, following the Zionist regime's ongoing military attacks on Palestine.
As a response, a senior executive at McDonald's Malaysia revealed that they had taken the issue to the Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
The Nov 3 post, however, had raised questions as McDonald Malaysia's chief technology officer Zaid Hasman claimed that the Sedition Act would be used against those who spread “fitnah” (slander) against the company.
"Thank you to MCMC for supporting us in curbing the issue.
"At the same time, McDonald's Malaysia has also identified over 60 individuals who had been spreading 'fitnah' and (they) will be charged under the Sedition Act," Zaid said in a Facebook post.
The post was accompanied by a group photo of five men, including MCMC chairperson Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and Zaid himself. According to Zaid's statement, the photo was taken during a visit by McDonald's Malaysia representatives to MCMC headquarters in Cyberjaya.
The post had since been taken down.
The Sedition Act is a colonial-era law that criminalises speech with "seditious tendency", and it imposes a minimum jail term of three years and allows the government to block online media deemed to be seditious.
McDonald's Malaysia declined to comment when contacted.
"We have shared your query with our client. However, they are unable to share a response for the time being," said a public relations personnel who handles media relations for the fast food chain.
Meanwhile, according to Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain, the authorities had not received any report from McDonald's Malaysia regarding the alleged slanders against them.
"We have not received any such report from McDonald's so far," he said in a text message to Malaysiakini.
Malaysiakini has also reached out to MCMC corporate communications personnel for comments but has yet to receive any response. - Mkini
