Controversial speaker Hew Kuan Yew, or better known as Superman Hew, left DAP in 2016.PETALING JAYA: Controversial speaker Hew Kuan Yew, or better known as Superman Hew, was arrested earlier today after a video of him telling an audience at a Pakatan Harapan ceramah that the Chinese community should take advantage of Malay disunity went viral last week.
Pahang police chief Ramli Yoosuf confirmed the former DAP man’s arrest.
In a post on his Facebook page, Hew said he was arrested by Raub police.
Hew left DAP in 2016. After last week’s video went viral, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said Hew’s stance did not reflect that of PH.
In a statement, Ramli said Hew’s speech in Cantonese, which was delivered at a ceramah in Raub on Nov 17, was found to have elements that could threaten public order.
Ramli said Hew was being investigated under Section 4A of the Election Offences Act 1954 for allegedly making a statement that promoted ill-will, discontent or hostility between people of the same race or different races.
The 52-year-old Hew is also being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code for statements which can threaten public peace and under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of telecommunication network facilities.
Ramli added that Hew is also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for his speech in a political programme at Taman Pandan Mawar, Melaka, on Nov 18.
Hew is also the author of the comic book “Belt and Road Initiative for Win-Winism”, which was banned by the authorities for purportedly promoting communist propaganda.
In 2017, he was arrested for a Facebook post which allegedly contained insensitive remarks made against then prime minister Najib Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor. - FMT
